“The Kościuszko Mound in Kraków was erected by the Polish nation between 1820 and 1823 as a symbolic grave in tribute to the hero of two continents – Tadeusz Kościuszko, American and Polish general and honorary citizen of the French Republic. It contains soil from the battlefields of the Kościuszko Uprising – Racławice, Szczekociny and Maciejowice, as well as from the American Independence Battles in which Kościuszko participated. The mound is the oldest monument commemorating Kościuszko, a beloved place of Poles and a well-known landmark on the globe, and it has recently been declared a Monument of History by the President of the Republic of Poland.
In the years 1850 – 1856 Austrian military authorities built Fort No. 2 “Kościuszko” around the Mound as part of the fortification of Krakow as a Fortress. This fort defended the access to the core of the Krakow Fortress from the west. At the end of World War II and in the first years after the war, the Fort was partially destroyed, but as a masterpiece of architecturae militaris it is currently being rebuilt.”
Prof. Ph.D. Mieczysław Rokosz
In the part of the fort administered by the Kościuszko Mound Committee, which is the historical and legal guardian of the Mound, conservation and adaptation work has been carried out for the permanent museum exhibition entitled “Kościuszko – a hero still needed”. EGLAS heating glass combined with COOL-LITE SKN 165 II solar control glass was installed on the roof of the courtyard with an area of 300 sqm, so that the visitors may not only enjoy a beautiful view in winter, but also feel the thermal comfort in summer. Thanks to that, the courtyard can be used as an exhibition and conference space for the Museum.
